It was set up to support local authorities increase the pace of improvement and promote excellence within social services. Hosted by the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) the Agency is a partnership enterprise between the Association, ADSS Cymru and the Welsh Assembly Government. The Agency comprises a central team based in Cardiff, along with improvement managers, focused on Social Services improvement across Wales. The work of the SSIA, funded by a Welsh Assembly Government Improvement Fund, has a strong emphasis on:

  • improving service delivery and enabling officers and members to better understand their performance;
  • enabling councils to improve their decisions and to make changes to services based on a better understanding and interpretation of evidence based practice;
  • increasing council's knowledge of their own performance through self assessment and through the design and implementation of workable local solutions for improvement;
  • Councils working collectively to enhance the sharing of good practice to ensure that vulnerable groups within their communities receive first class services.

The Agency is one of a number in Wales that promote and support improvement in social care. We are working closely with a range of partners, including the WLGA, National Leadership and Innovation Agency for Healthcare (NLIAH), Care Council Wales, Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSiW) and Social Care Institute for Excellence's (SCIE), to ensure that our programmes fit with each other and together provide the support that is needed. However, for local authorities in Wales the SSIA provides a 'first port of call' for advice and support on performance improvement.
